My favorite Spectrum News 1 Scripts

Below are some of my favorite scripts that went to air during my 17 months as a news producer at Spectrum News 1. These selections are predominantly
composed of my writing, quoting, and editing decisions; both verbal and visual.
Note that they are formatted as verbal TV scripts, not written articles. They are not in AP style, tenses are often forced to the present, ellipses and dashes are used to indicate verbal pauses, and many conjunctions, adverbs, and parts of proper nouns are cut for vocal brevity. Scripts also include cues for b-roll video (VO), interview clips (SOT), and graphics (FS Bullets, phone, etc). Visual descriptions are written in parentheses.
Housing Instability Effects on Children
Aired 6:00 A.M., 8/25/2023
[[START]]
[[Anchor at monitor]] (Photo of a sad child sitting against wall)
Moving to a new home can be a fresh, exciting adventure-- but for children, the frequency *and circumstances* behind the move can leave a big impact... and not always a good one.
[[FS BULLETS]] (bullet graphic visually restate the points below)
A new report by The Children's Agenda looks into Rochester City
School District children moving homes... throughout 2021 and '22.
Excluding transition years--
researchers found an average of 38-percent of school children
moved-- finding that movement rates were higher among Black, Latino, and
mixed-race students... kindergarten through 2nd grade students... and
students attending schools in neighborhoods on
the north and west side of the city- where there are more low income
families. They found the highest rates within School number 4 on the
city's west side, with nearly *half* of it's students moving homes.
[[SOT]] (Nabozny speaks at a podium at a press release, unveiling his organization's findings for the first time.)
((Pete Nabozny, Director of Policy, The Children's Agenda))
"Experiencing lots of moves- particularly moves as the result of
negative consequences, things like experiencing eviction, whether you
were formally evicted or your landlord told you you had to leave- those
kinds of things can impact a child negatively
for a lifetime."
[[VO]] (video briefly shows parts of Nabozny's presentation)
Leaders at The Children's Agenda hope lawmakers will take their report into consideration when creating new housing policies.

Trump Federal Indictment
Aired 6:00 A.M., 8/2/2023
[[START]]
[[Anchor at monitor]] (Picture of Donald Trump speaking at a podium)
Former President Donald Trump- facing federal charges for his efforts to overturn the 20-20 election.
Washington D-C grand jury- handing up the indictment--
It's the third against the former president this year.
[[FS BULLETS]] (bullet points restate what's mentioned below)
Trump- charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States,
conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an
official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
[[VO]] (video of Trump and associates walking with media surrounding them)
Federal prosecutors- led by Special Counsel Jack Smith- say Trump
and six unnamed co-conspirators engaged in a scheme to stop the
congressional certification of Joe Biden's victory.
That includes pressuring state officials to invalidate results,
trying to submit false slates of electors, and pressuring then-Vice
President Mike Pence to reject valid slates--
something Pence didn't have the authority do.
Trump -also accused of exploiting the violence at the capitol on January 6th to further delay the proceedings.
[[SOT]]
((Jack Smith/Special Counsel)) "The attack on our nation's capitol on 1/6/21 was an unprecedented
assault on the seat of American democracy. As described in the
indictment, it was fueled by lies. Lies by the defendant targeted at
obstructing a bedrock function of the US government,
the nation's process of collecting, counting and certifying the
results of the presidential election."
[[VO]] (video of Trump and associates walking
with media surrounding them)
Trump- denying any wrongdoing. He accused Smith of going after him for political reasons.
The charges in Washington follow federal charges in Florida... for
allegedly keeping classified documents after leaving office... and state
charges in New York in an alleged hush money scheme.

BTS School Safety
Aired 6:00 A.M., 8/31/2023
[[START]]
The familiar yellow of the school bus- now accented with a patch of black.
New security cameras- being offered to every school in Monroe County. They'll capture the license plates of any drivers illegally passing a bus while it's stopped. State analysts- estimating more than 50-thousand drivers illegally drive around school busses every school day.
((Dr. Kasey Kosiorek, Superintendent, Hilton Central School District)) "When folks send their children to school, they're entrusting us with their precious cargo. The number 1 priority we have as a school district is to ensure the safety of our students."
New penalties- to complement the cameras. 250-dollar fine for the first violation-- going up to 300-dollars for multiple incidents within 18 months. No impact to drivers licenses or insurance rates.
These cameras- part of millions of dollars of safety upgrades going into area schools-- as our Rachel Niemi shows us
